Suspect charged with murder in Natalia shooting

Billy Ray Monreal arrested in Eugene Sanchez

NATALIA, Texas - Texas Rangers arrested 20-year-old Billy Ray Monreal Friday morning for his alleged role in a double shooting.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night in the small town of Natalia, about 30 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Officials said Monreal shot 32-year-old Eugene Sanchez and his brother, Johnny, at the intersection of 4th Street and Aubrey Street.

Both men were taken to University Hospital, where Eugene Sanchez died from his injuries late Thursday night.

Johnny Sanchez remains hospitalized, his condition is unknown.

Law enforcement officials would not go into detail about the moments leading up to the shooting, but they said Monreal had a history with the Sanchez brothers.

The Texas Rangers took over the investigation due to the Natalia Police Department’s lack of resources.

Monreal is being held in the Medina County Jail.

This is the first murder in Natalia, a town of about 1,400 people, since 2006.
