The vigil slowly took shape Tuesday evening at the scene of the accident that took Joe Gamez’s life early last Saturday morning.

He and his wife Rose were riding eastbound on East Commerce when they were hit by 25-year-old Ruben Morin, III, who was allegedly drunk at the time.

Rose, still showing the physical injuries suffered in the accident, was greeted by friends, family and people she had never met.

“He would have loved it,” said Joe’s sister Raquel Gamez. “He loved having people together. He always brought people together.”

Gamez took up cycling for his health after getting diagnosed with diabetes, a battle faced by many of his fellow riders who showed up, some on two wheels.

“We want to make San Antonio a bike friendly city. The way we can get healthier is to cycle,” said longtime friend JR Delgado. “I was 340 pounds and once I got into the cycling community I started losing weight.”

Following a candle light prayer, guests took turns spray painting a bike white, a “ghost bike,” a sign of a rider killed on the road doing what they loved.

“Like my niece said, it was the best night of her life with her Dad,” said Delgado. She had the most fun with her dad and that's how we probably want to remember that night.”

A rosary will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sunset Northwest at 6321 Bandera Road. A funeral mass will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary church at 617 S. Santa Rosa followed by burial at Mission Park at 1700 SE Military.
