Living in modest comfort in SA takes $61,000 for family of 4

Economic Policy institute calculates expenses

SAN ANTONIO - A family of four would need an annual income of $61,345 to have a modest standard of living, according to new figures by the Economic Policy Institute.

The Washington D.C. nonprofit think tank calculated what costs would for common living expenses in cities across the U.S.

"It sounds like a lot, but per month, it's not a lot," said Vanessa Garcia.

She should know. She has a family of four. Her husband thought living on $61,000 would be tight.

"Sixty-one thousand is right at the mark," her husband, Carlos Garcia. "You've got a car payment and health insurance for the kids."

Here's the breakdown by EPI for monthly costs for that local family of four:

Housing --  $870

Food --$754

Child care --$961

Transportation --$607

Health care --$1272

Other --$416

Taxes --$232

Housing costs were based on rents plus utilities, according to EPI. Health care includes insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

Other necessities include things like clothing and school supplies.
