2 women killed, 2 more hurt after SUV smashes into tree in NW San Antonio

SAPD: Speed, alcohol possible factors in deadly crash on Medical Drive

SAN ANTONIO - Two women were killed and two others were hurt when an SUV went airborne and smashed into a tree on the city's Northwest Side early Thursday morning.

San Antonio police said the driver of the SUV was speeding down Medical at 2:45 a.m. when she lost control while negotiating a curve, went airborne and slammed into the tree at Fairhaven.

The impact caused the SUV's roof to collapse, trapping the driver and one of the women, who were both pronounced dead at the scene. The two women have been identified as Maria Villareal, 22, and Monica Lorraine Rodriguez, 21.

The injured women, identified as Dezirae Espinoza, 19, and Amber Rodriguez, 19, were taken to University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

People who work in the area of the crash in the 4100 block of Medical said speed is a problem on the winding road, despite a sign warning drivers of the curves ahead.

According to a San Antonio Police Department accident report, there have been 15 other accidents in the same block in the last six months.

"It's a shame, you know. People driving too fast. It's s 35 mph zone, and there's a reason for it," said Mark Stopkey, who works in an office building directly behind the crash scene.

The sign warning drivers of the S-curves on Medical posts a speed limit of 25 mph, but people like Stopkey said the typical speed is more like 45 to 50 mph.

"I think there's just a lot of careless people. I mean, even after the wreck, people are just speeding through here," said Maycle Stout, who also works in the area.
