That bites! How to detect Bed Bugs

Know where to look to find out if your hotel room is infested

SAN ANTONIO - Finding Bed Bugs in your hotel room or, even worse, finding you brought them home with you, is enough to ruin any vacation.

That’s why it is a good idea to know exactly how and where to inspect your hotel room to find out if it could be crawling with the unwanted critters.

Lori Calzoncit, Senior Sanitarian with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, recommends setting your luggage in a safe spot while you have a look around.

“In the bathroom is a great place because Bed Bugs don’t like restrooms,” said Calzoncit. “They’re cold, and because of the tile, its not a place they’re going to like."

She says to start your inspection on the bed, of course -- the corner, in particular.

"The place they really like the most is in the seams of the mattress. So if you look right here in the seams of the mattress, you'll be able to see if you see any,” Calzoncit said.

Next up: check the seams and crevices of any upholstered furniture.

"Under the cushion would be a place they like the most because its tight and dark,” she said.

Calzoncit suggests even checking behind the headboard of the bed, pictures hanging on walls and the inside of drawers.

“Unless you plan on staying there for an extended stay, we would advise that you not put your clothes in the drawers, just use your own suitcase,” Calzoncit adds.

Finally, look down. Check the edge of the carpet and along the baseboards.

Even if your room is clear, its a good idea to store your luggage on a luggage rack instead of on the floor or the bed.

If you think your luggage has been infested, Metro Health says you can get rid of the bugs by putting your luggage in your car parked out in the summer sun for a few hours and the heat will kill them.

Be sure to wash everything that was inside your suitcase.

Bed bugs do not carry any diseases.
