SAPD, Crime Stoppers target felons with guns

New initiative announced; Crime Stoppers to offer reward

SAN ANTONIO - A joint experimental initiative aimed at getting weapons out the hands of felons was announced Tuesday during a news conference at police headquarters.

“We’ve got criminals who are walking the streets and carrying guns,” said San Antonio police Chief William McManus.

He cited recent numbers showing that in 2011, there were 219 arrests made of felons in possession of a firearm.

In 2012, the number jumped to 289 and so far this year, 123 arrests have been made.

“If you know someone who is out there carrying a weapon -- a gun, a firearm -- and they’ve been convicted of a felony, please call Crime Stoppers to report it,” McManus said.

Bob Vallance, of Crime Stoppers, said they will offer rewards and, as with all calls, the caller can remain anonymous.

“If we could get the guns from the criminals, it would make the streets safer and make officers safer,” Vallance said.

The initiative will run through the end of the year -- at which time, it will be evaluated to see whether it will continue.
