Educators race to win school supplies for their schools

HEB hosts scavenger hunt for local teachers

SAN ANTONIO - Tax-Free Weekend is here and in the spirit of school shopping, HEB hosted a "Back-to-School Teacher and Principal Scavenger Hunt" on Thursday.

Local teachers and principals from 12 different school districts raced against the clock on Thursday morning, competing for a combined $3,500 for their schools.

The object of the scavenger hunt was to race down two school supply aisles at HEB, making sure they get all of the 12 items on the list.

The contestant with the best time wins, but if someone picks up the wrong item, they would get 5 seconds deducted off of their time.

Lacey Trevino, an art teacher at Harris Middle School at Northeast ISD, said it wasn't as easy as she had anticipated.

"It was fun," said Trevino. "It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, that's for sure. I thought I was going to run through there and get all these items, but instead I was frozen trying to find them."

Juan Perez, representing Linton Elementary at Northside ISD, pulled in a win for his school.

"We just came through here, went through the aisles," said Perez. "It was like a race track. We went down aisle 21 then back down aisle 23 and we were just grabbing supplies left and right."

The winners got an extra $100 each to purchase school supplies for their schools, which was on top of the $350 each educator got, just for participating.

"A lot of money comes out of the pockets of teachers and principals," said Katherine Crabtree, with HEB public affairs. "So, it's an extra thank you for all that they've done and basically, just helping them get ready for their classrooms."
