CNN: Guadalupe County ideal spot for job-seekers

CNN Money Magazine ranks county number 4 on top spots list

SEGUIN, Texas - Guadalupe County -- and the city of Seguin, in particular -- is growing fast.

And with the growth comes new jobs.

In the recent edition of CNN’S Money Magazine, the county was ranked fourth in the nation among the top 25 areas where jobs can readily be found.

“Texas has a thousand people a day moving to the state and we are here to create jobs for those people,” said Terry Trevino, the City of Seguin's economic development director.

She noted that the manufacturing industries growth began in 2008 when it was announced that Caterpillar Inc. planned to relocate one of the companies primary global assembly and paint facilities to Seguin.

“It gave people hope who weren’t in jobs and I think it gave them a new outlook for the future and of promising opportunity for job creation,” Trevino said.

Last week, Amazon announced plans to build a $170 million distribution center in Schertz. It will initially mean 350-full time jobs.

“We’ve had a very diversified manufacturing base over the years and we have companies that have been in our community for years,” said Sherry Nefford-Esse, Seguin Chamber of Commerce president.

That, she said, accounts for the areas continued economic growth.

Beyond creating jobs, the growth is good for the entire county, according to the county judge.

“I look for Guadalupe County's taxes to go lower,” Guadalupe County Judge Larry Jones said.

The current annual budget county commissioners are considering calls for a reduction in property taxes according to Jones.
