15 million surge protectors recalled
Consumer Reports rates chain saws
Fifteen million surge protectors have been recalled because they pose a fire danger, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall involves APC 7 and 8 series SurgeArrest surge protectors manufactured before 2003. The list of model numbers can be found at www.cpsc.gov.
The move comes ater 700 reports of the surge protectors overheating and melting and 55 claims of property damage.
One fire caused more than $900,000 damage to a home and another $750,000 in damage to a medical facility.
Thirteen injuries have been reported.
Consumers are urged to unplug the device and contact Schneider Electric for a free replacement.
Frigidaire also recalled 14,000 of its professional blenders because the blade shaft assembly can break during use.
The recall involves model FPJB56B7MS. It was sold at Best Buy, Target and others stores since March 2012 for about $130.
Consumers should contact Frigidaire.
Consumer Reports tested 20 chain saws and found some to recommend.
For cutting up branches a couple times a year, an electric chain saw offers convenience. They name the Worx WG303.1 for $100 a best buy.
For bigger jobs, gas power is the better choice. Consumer Reports top-rated the Stihl MS 180 C-BE for $230. If that's too steep, they also liked the Craftsman 34190.
