San Antonio Zoo prepares for centennial celebration
Construction of Zootennial Plaza underway at San Antonio Zoo
It may look like a construction site, but it is actually the San Antonio Zoo's future Zootennial Plaza.
Wednesday night, the zoo hosted some of its biggest and most generous donors. Mary Ann Wheeler, one of the donors, got a sneak peak at what Zootennial Plaza is all about.
"I've been a part of the zoo ever since I was about 2-years-old and appreciate it and love it ," said Wheeler.
Wheeler along with other donors signed their name on the cement floor of the future gathering area. The $8 million project will feature an upscale restaurant and a custom designed carousel.
Wheeler said her family will be prominently represented on the carousel, which is a favorite childhood amusement ride of hers.
“I bought 13 other animals one for my children and grandchildren each will have an animal on the carousel," said Wheeler.
Next year will mark 100 years for the San Antonio Zoo. The zoo director, Steve McCusker, said none of it would be possible without such a supportive community.
"Without the support of the citizens and travelers tourists we couldn't do what we do, " said McCusker. Zootennial Plaza will be open to the public in March 2014.
