Mother’s search for son’s killer enters third year

Eric Mendoza shot to death on Northeast Side in 2010

It has been nearly three years since Eric Mendoza was shot to death, but his mother is not giving up in her search for his killer.

Patty Hernandez said bringing her son’s killer to justice is about more than closure.

“I feel like I owe it to Eric,” Hernandez said. “I don’t want to stop because I feel like he deserves justice.”

On Oct. 10, 2010 Mendoza left work and headed for a friend’s house in the Village Path subdivision.

Witnesses said Mendoza was involved in some sort of traffic incident in which someone was cut-off.

As he drove near Interstate 35 and Rittiman Road, Mendoza called his friend and said someone was following him. He was shot multiple times and his body was found slumped over the steering wheel of his truck.

After an investigation police were unable to identify any leads.

“All that they can tell us is that it was a dark Dodge sedan, four door, with two people in it,” Hernandez said.

As her son’s case continues to get colder, Hernandez has done all she can to keep it in the public’s mind. She purchased a large billboard on I-35 and Eisenhauer Road last year.

“I’ll keep going. As hard as it is every day for me, I’m not going to stop searching for these folks," Hernandez said.

Despite the lack of suspects and information, Hernandez remains confident that someone will eventually be caught.

“They’re going to say something to someone,” she said. “To me, it just can’t come soon enough.”
