Local restaurant raises money for breast cancer treatment

Fortune-telling machine proceeds donated to WINGS

Tucked away in the back of the Pearl Brewery restaurant Arcade is a Zoltar fortune telling machine.

For 50 cents, Zoltar will reveal your future.

But this fortune teller is also bringing big change to uninsured and under-insured women in South Texas.

Chef Jesse Perez, owner of Arcade, is donating all money raised from Zoltar to the local nonprofit organization. WINGS

“Every single quarter that has been put into Zoltar since we opened on Valentine’s Day will be going to WINGS today. And we will continue to give WINGS any future money put into the machine," Perez said.

Perez said he wanted to give back to our community, and he decided WINGS -- Women Involved In Nurturing Giving and Sharing -- would be a perfect fit.

"WINGS is a local charity that helps the local community. They help people who don't have the resources to get treatments, and that was really dear to my heart," Perez said.

Perez’s inspiration for giving back is proudly displayed on a corner shelf in his restaurant. It’s an 8x10 picture of his mother, Olidia T. Perez, who passed away from breast cancer.

There is a candle that he lights every day in honor of her memory.  He thought this gesture would make her proud and sees it as an opportunity to honor her and give to those still fighting breast cancer.

"In memory of her, I wanted to make sure that we had an opportunity to give back to an organization like WINGS because it was so dear to our hearts," he said.

WINGS cofounder Terri Jones says the gesture is not only appreciated, it will go directly to saving lives.

"We anticipate that we will earmark these 50 cents for blood work for every woman in the program for a year," Jones said.

When the door to Zoltar was opened, the bucket was so heavy, Perez said he could barely lift it out. The quarters were dumped on a giant table, and WINGS volunteers went to work counting all the cash. The total raised at last count $771.

And that’s just a drop in the bucket of what’s to come.

Perez said he wants everyone to realize that each time they eat at Arcade and give Zoltar 50 cents to peek at their future, it could mean a small fortune for WINGS.
