San Antonio high school coaches say 91-0 game not bullying

Losing team filed complaint after lopsided loss

Local high school football coaches said Wednesday a 91-0 loss by Fort Worth's Western Hills team was not a case of bullying.

On Friday, Aledo High School's football team crushed Western Hills, leading one parent on the losing side to file a bullying complaint against the Aledo coaching staff.

A veteran football coach, Donald Gatian from Lanier High School, said the winning team did nothing wrong.

"But it wasn't a bullying case I mean, that's football," said Coach Gatian.

Gatian said after 30 years of coaching, he's been on both sides of the fence, where he's been ahead and where his team has been behind. But he's pretty sure when Aledo defeated Western Hills, it wasn't to show off.

“Some teams are blessed with a lot of talent. Right now, Brennan is one of them in our area, they're blessed they got a ton of talent," said Coach Gatian.

"It's never done maliciously where we're trying to embarrass anyone," said Head Coach Albert Torres of Edison High School.

Torres agrees with Gatian - the situation wasn't bullying.

"It's a different story if you're putting in stars till the end of the game and you're winning 91-0," said Coach Torres.

According to Aledo's coach, he started substituting players in the first quarter.

"You teach that to your kids that you can overcome odds and you go to battle because that's what you do every day in life," said Coach Torres.

Aledo's principal said his report on the bullying complaint should be completed this week. A copy will be given to the parent who filed the complaint and the staff at Western Hills.

The coach of the team that won that blowout said a district investigation found "no grounds' to support a bullying claim, before or during the game. State law required the district to investigate the complaint, which accused the coaches of "not easing up.. When the game was in hand."
