San Antonio man who burned ex-fiancee gets probation

Lee Griego sentenced to 10 years probation

A San Antonio man who badly burned his ex-fiancee in a botched suicide attempt has been sentenced to 10 years probation.

A jury deliberated for over three hours Monday evening and handed down the verdict against 27-year-old Lee Griego.

Griego pleaded guilty to aggravated assault causing bodily injury in connection with the 2011 fire.

He claimed his ex-fiancee, 21-year-old Megan Baldonado, was burned as the result of a failed attempt to kill himself in the garage of an apartment they shared.

Griego burned his hands during the incident, but Baldonado suffered burns to more than 65 percent of her body.

Prosecutors were seeking a 35 year prison sentence, but Griego's attorneys argued he never intended to hurt Baldonado.

Griego testified saying he was depressed over the couple’s recent decision not to marry and Baldonado came into the garage just as he finished placing gasoline soaked rags in and around his car.

He said as he sat in the driver’s seat, he flicked his lighter but did not intend to set the fire. But the flames ignited and Baldonado was burned. In addition to probation, Griego has to pay a $10,000 fine.
