Dozens train with San Antonio Police Department's SWAT Team

People given taste of what it takes to be part of the team

It was the first of its kind, an opportunity for anyone to line up and train with the very best: The SAPD SWAT Team.

Dozens were given a taste of what it takes to run in their shoes and be part of a team like no other.

The path onto the SAPD SWAT Team isn't an easy one. Carrying the shield involves team work. It includes obstacles most can't overcome.

"Carrying the shield, it was pretty heavy and then having to run with it, too," said Virginia Olvera. "It was pretty intense."

"It's awesome. It gives everybody an eye opener of what to expect when they're coming in, or when they are about to apply," said Scott Morales.

Morales is applying to the police academy. He trains often, but never like this.

"I usually come on my Saturdays to workout with the regular PT and it's hard, but not as hard as this," Morales said.

The training included a little bit of everything, such as push ups, sit-ups and hurdles. It allows the SAPD to size up future applicants, and it gives people interested in joining the department a taste of what it takes.

"We're seeing people that again, don't prepare themselves as well as they should, so this is a wake-up call for everybody who wants to join the police department," said Lt. Marcus Booths.

SAPD used Saturday's event as a recruiting tool.
