Bexar County commissioners approve funding for UIW medical center

$3 million approved for proposed UIW medical center in downtown San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word's plan for a new downtown medical center is a step closer to becoming a reality.

On Tuesday, Bexar County Commissioners unanimously approved $3 million in funding for the project.

The money will be paid over six years in the form of economic development grants. UIW must use the funds for economic development and job creation related to the project.

Downtown officials say commissioners have made a wise investment that could have a big impact on education in the San Antonio area. "We see alot of potential not only for development but also this great educational partnership with the San Antonio Independent School District with their health magnet school right there on the same campus," said Pat DiGiovanni, CENTRO San Antonio.

Both the city and county are on board with the medical center and now UIW must come up with $25 million to build the facility.
