Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett confirmed on ESPN Wednesday he is battling a degenerative condition that is usually caused by head trauma.

Dorsett said on ESPN's "Outside The Lines" he was diagnosed Monday with having signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition that scientists have linked to depression and dementia.

Dorsett said he has trouble controlling his emotions and is prone to outbursts at his wife and daughters. He added he has battled memory loss and depression for several years, and even had suicidal thoughts.

"I've thought about crazy stuff, sort of like, 'Why do I need to continue going through this?'" "I'm too smart of a person, I like to think, to take my life, but it's crossed my mind," Dorsett said on "Outside The Lines."

The Dallas Morning News reports Dorsett is among more than 4,500 former players who are plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the NFL.

The NFL and attorneys for the plaintiffs announced last month they had reached a $765 million settlement which has not been finalized.
