SA drivers filling up for $2.78 a gallon
Average $2.96 a gallon, lowest in two years
There were more grins than grumbles at the gas pump Friday as drivers were filling up for as low as $2.78 a gallon.
"It's a big surprise to drive by and see $2.79," said Paula Carey, who was filling up her tank at he HEB on Austin Highway at Harry Wurzbach. "I was like, you've got to be kidding."
It was bumper-to-bumper at the HEB as drivers were taking advantage of prices they had not seen in at least two years.
"I drove all the way from the other side of town to get $2.79 gas," motorist John John Tucker said.
By late morning, the store had dropped the price to $2.78 a gallon.
All over town, prices have dipped below the $3 mark.
The average price has dropped a nickel in the past week, down to $2.96 a gallon. That's 26 cents cheaper than one year ago.
Sarah Hernandez, who was filling up the family Tahoe, said every dollar she can save at the pump helps.
"I have three kids, so I need lunch money for them at school," she said. "It helps a lot."
What's driving prices down? Supplies are up, demand is down and so is the price of oil, according to AAA.
Also, stations have switched to a cheaper winter blend.
Industry experts say we can expect prices to continue to fall, about another nickel by Thanksgiving.
