Photo project celebrates real heroines

Isis Project SA empowers young girls as real heroines though photographs

A local art initiative by Isis Project SA is hoping to empower young girls by showcasing them in photographs as real-life heroines in history.

The first photo sessions were recently completed by Kat Carey, of DarkRoom Foto, and marketer Cassandra Yardeni.

The two women are also young mothers, which is why they came together this fall to begin Isis Project.

They posted that they would be scheduling photo sessions on Facebook.com/IsisProjectSA, and within days, were booked up.

Yardeni says they are looking for ways to inspire young girls to become more than just princesses and rock icons.

"As the mother of a 2-year-old, it was important to me that she know that there are females to look up to in sciences and history," she said.

Her partner in the project already has a business photographing families and children, so getting the children dressed up as an icon was not difficult.

She would like to see her photographs to be admired by more than family members.

“I would love to see these around the city so that everyone can see them on scaffolding, around the schools, not just around the South Side schools, but the North Side schools too,” said Carey.

One of her subjects, 3-year-old Zahara Elizarrarez, is her favorite.  Mom Janet says they chose Frida Kahlo in part because she is trying to make sure her daughter connects with a positive role model within her Mexican heritage.

Janet Elizarraraz said in planning the shoot, “I would ask her, 'Do you want to put on these earrings, do you want to wear this shawl?' It was always yes, and she was excited."

The girls range in age from four months to 14 years.

The photo sessions are inexpensive for the parents at $20, and future sessions are booked through December.
