Officers evacuate area around standoff

Armed man with hostage keeps police at bay at apartment complex

A Thursday morning standoff involving an armed man at an apartment complex north of downtown turned into a hostage situation, police said.

But what was going on inside that apartment, located near the intersection of Evergreen and McCullough, was not the only concern for police.

They were also having to worry about what was happening outside in the area surrounding the building.

While the armed man kept responding police officers at bay, other officers were busy keeping people out of the danger zone.

People who live in the building, as well as some who were too close to the trouble, were asked to leave by police.

Although police shut down the streets surrounding the standoff scene, people could still be seen milling about on the outskirts, with quite a bit of foot and vehicle traffic in this area.

One man was stopped by police as he tried to walk back into the danger zone.

"My wallet and my shoes are in there because I left in a hurry this morning because they told us to leave quickly," said neighbor David Brown.

That man said he lives in the building where the standoff was going on and got a knock on the door very early in the morning.

Other people said they had a tough time getting to where they were going because of the closed streets.

Police say with an armed and unpredictable man in that apartment, the evacuations and closures were all done in the name of safety.

They have taken to social media to provide regular updates on the situation. The San Antonio Police Department is using its Facebook page to let the public know what's going on and they ask that people use that rather than coming out to the scene.
