South Texas rescue group: Dog possibly used for 'target practice'

Candy's hind legs now paralyzed; dog fitted with wheelchair

A South Texas dog has been left partially paralyzed after allegedly being used as target practice.

Candy, a 2-year-old Black Mouth Cur, was found on the streets of Orange Grove, located near Corpus Christi.

Discovered without the use of her two hind legs, a Corpus Christi rescue group was able to get Candy to a veterinarian for help.

"We showed up that day (to the vet) and they said her spinal cord is damaged (and that) she’s paralyzed,” recalled Liza Hitt, whose group, For the Love of Strays, recued Candy.

With no visual wounds, it took an x-ray to determine what happened to the dog.

The results, said Hitt, were appalling.

"The vet came out with the x-ray, in shock, and said that she was full of bullets,” said Hitt.

The bullets inside of Candy came from three different guns.

"Somebody was obviously shooting her on purpose. I don’t know if you call that target practice or not. Maybe it wasn’t practice,” said Hitt. “Maybe they just like the idea of hitting a creature that would yelp and cry when it got hit."

After an outpouring of support in Corpus Christi, Candy was fit with a donated wheelchair and took to it quickly.

Hitt then brought her to South Texas Veterinary Specialists in San Antonio to determine if she would ever have use of her hind legs again.

Doctors determined that her spine was irreparable. It was a diagnosis that has yet to set Candy back.

"She just loves people so much. She cannot get enough attention,” said Hitt.

As for the person who injured her: “I think she would want to get close to that person even though they hurt her,” said Hitt. “I kind of figure if Candy could forgive them, then I could too."

Hitt is looking for a home for Candy and someone who can take care of her needs. If you are interested in adopting Candy, you can contact Liza Hitt at 361-779-5295.

Candy also has a Facebook page detailing her journey.
