Family of man killed by fleeing suspect speaks out
Jimmy Medrano, 49, hit by wanted felon in stolen car
SAN ANTONIO - The brother of a man who was struck and killed Monday afternoon by a suspect who was fleeing from San Antonio police is trying to make sense of the tragedy that has visited his family just days before Thanksgiving.null
Jimmy Medrano, 49, was walking on a sidewalk along South Hackberry near Fair Avenue when a stolen car driven by a wanted felon jumped a curb and hit him.
Ruben Medrano said the woman who killed his older brother has ripped out the heart and soul of his family.
"He was a wonderful brother, this is killing everybody," Ruben said choking back tears as he was surrounded by family members.
Ruben said his brother was walking to his mother's home to take care of her, something he does several times a week.
"That's Jimmy, that's what he does every day, he walks," Ruben said. "Anywhere he goes he loves to walk, he's a walker. Everybody knows Jimmy because they know he walks everywhere. Everybody knows him."
Jimmy was walking on the sidewalk when he was hit by a stolen car driven by 31-year-old Roxanne Campa. According to the San Antonio Police Department and court records, Campa had warrants our for her arrest and was fleeing from a traffic stop when she lost control of the car, jumped the curb and ran over Jimmy.
"She struck and killed him on impact, broke his neck," Ruben said.
Jimmy's death has hit the family hard, especially his mother and his many nieces and nephews who he treated like his own kids.
"He was a special man and he will be greatly missed by all these children," said Christina Duke, a friend of the family. "He had a good relationship with each and every one of them a personal relationship, he was just a beautiful person."
As the family prepares to face their first holiday without Jimmy they are focused on making sure Campa is punished for her crime.
"She's a coward, she can do the crime but she has to run," Ruben said. "I'm going to be there every day she shows up in court. I'm going to be there to show her my face, showing her the pain that she caused me because of her stupidness."
Campa is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail. She is charged with murder, evading arrest, theft of a vehicle and drug possession charges.
Since Campa was already wanted on an outstanding felony warrant she will not be eligible for bond.
Meanwhile the Medrano family is struggling to get through the Thanksgiving holiday and find the money to pay for his funeral.
"It's real tough you know cause it's the holidays," Ruben said. "He's supposed to be here with us."
