Poth police chief describes officer’s role in shootout
Suspects in shooting of SAPD officer captured near Poth
A chase that began in San Antonio ended in Wilson County just outside the town of Poth Sunday morning.
Two suspects, Shawn Ruiz Puente, 32, and Jenevieve Ramos, 28, were arrested following a shootout with Poth police Officer Roberto Sanchez.
Sanchez had been alerted that the suspects were headed his way. The two had led police on a chase from San Antonio, where they were suspects in a Saturday night armed robbery.
San Antonio police Officer Robert Deckard, 31, was shot and critically wounded as the suspects fled through Atascosa County.
With Sanchez in pursuit, the suspects pulled over along Highway 181 South just outside Poth.
“Both doors came open and they started shooting,” said Poth Police Chief Lowell Hull.
He said Sanchez returned fire as the suspects ran across the highway.
“(Sanchez) took a defensive position and survived,” said Hull, as he described how the pair continued firing at Sanchez as they ran.
The suspects were captured in a brushy area just after 8 a.m. Sunday.
On Monday, they appeared before a magistrate in Wilson County. Their bonds were set at $250,000 each.
Puente is jailed in Atascosa County and Ramos is jailed Atascosa County.
Texas Rangers have begun an investigation into the case.
Deckard remains in critical condition at San Antonio Military Medical Center.
