Wrong-way driver dies after crashing into 18-wheeler on I-35

I-35 upper level near Cesar Chavez down to one lane

SAN ANTONIO - A driver headed in the wrong direction on North Interstate 35 was killed Tuesday morning after slamming into an 18-wheeler.

The accident happened just before 3 a.m.

We are told that the 18-wheeler was headed North on the northbound lanes of I-35 near Cesar Chavez Street when a small car, traveling South on the northbound lanes, hit the truck head on.

It appears the impact caused the 18-wheeler to slam into the median. Although, that driver is expected to be OK.

Fire crews had to be called to the scene to cut the deceased victim out of the small car.

One of the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 remained shut down as crews worked to clear the scene.

The closure caused delays for several hours.

As of noon on Tuesday, the identity of the victim had not been released.
