3 arrested on money laundering charges ID'd
Raul Garcia Jr., Rodolfo Garcia, Brandi Bernal pulled over with $80k in cash in truck
The three people arrested in a traffic stop Sunday night that resulted money laundering charges against all three have been identified.
According to police, Raul Garcia Jr., 21; Rodolfo Garcia, 18; and Brandi Bernal, 19, were all riding in a Ford F-150 pickup truck when it was pulled over for speeding around 6:45 p.m. in the area of Interstate 35 and Splashtown.
Police searched the truck and found an estimated $70,000 in cash.
"It's a pretty eye-opening amount. There’s a bag with a large amount of money in there. The center console is loaded with money, also there’s money spread all over the vehicle,” said Sgt. Greg Brooks at the time of their arrests. “When (officers) pulled the vehicle over, the driver was intoxicated. The officer was up at the vehicle (and) he immediately smelled a real heavy smell of marijuana inside the vehicle."
Police searched the truck using a K-9 unit. They said they found numerous hidden compartments believed to be used to stash drugs.
“It looks like it’s going to be a smuggling operation. It looks like they were back on their way down south with the money,” Brooks said.
Officers arrested two men including the driver and a female passenger.
All three people are facing money laundering charges. The driver will face DWI charges. It will be up to the narcotics investigators to determine what other charges could be filed.
