Defenders Blog: Nasty Neighbors

What can you do about the eyesores that plague your neighborhood?

SAN ANTONIO - Springtime in San Antonio. Beautiful. The grass is green, flowers are blooming… and there - sparkling in the sunshine - is the reflection off the bumper from the junk car in your neighbor's front yard.

Few things seem to rile our viewers as much as nasty neighborhood eyesores. And for good reason: piles of junk in the neighborhood can harbor unwanted rodents and pests, anything that holds water can breed mosquitoes, and worst of all, junk brings down property values. It’s not fair. No wonder it makes people mad.

What can you do? In the city of San Antonio, you should call the Code Enforcement Division (formerly Code Compliance) at 210-207-6000. There you can register your complaint, and let the city’s Code Enforcement Officers talk to the neighbors. Give the city some time to respond, please, as they get a lot of calls. You can also file a complaint on the city’s website

There are a few other alternatives to having the city get involved. You can contact a neighborhood association about the problem, or you might get some neighbor volunteers together and offer to help clean up someone’s yard. In some cases, the offending neighbor just can’t do the job themselves, or can’t afford to hire someone to do the work for them. Helping out is the neighborly thing to do.

However you choose to handle a nasty neighborhood eyesore, it’s to your benefit to be involved. It can keep your neighborhood safer, and keep your property values up.
