Navy vet saved from deplorable living conditions after friends call KSAT Defenders

Adult Protective Services helping 80-year-old Lawrence Ferrell

SAN ANTONIO - A nearly 80-year old Navy veteran was living in deplorable conditions. His house was so run down, he was told not to stay there. That's when some of his friends came to his rescue and called the KSAT 12 Defenders.

Lawrence Ferrell's small wood frame house near I-10 and Hildebrand consisted of a filthy kitchen with leaky plumbing, a bathroom badly in need of help, boxes and junk all over the floor, even a dead dog under his bed.

Adult Protective Services said he couldn't live here anymore. That's when his friends stepped in to help.

"If we could have gutted it out we would have. We did stuff that we didn't even know was possible for us," said Yolie Arriaga, Ferrell's friend.

Arriaga and Amy Sanchez took him in and went to work making his house livable.

"I know most definite it is (livable). All it does is take a little cotton picking work it'd be alright," said Ferrell.

They couldn't do all the work he needed, so they called the KSAT 12 Defenders.

"He served the Navy and retired 20 years from the Navy. Somebody can at least help him some way."

KSAT 12 got Adult Protective Services involved and they found money to patch a hole in his roof.

APS said sometimes they can help when seniors have emergencies.

"We have a case sometimes where a person has been in the hospital and comes out with a dozen prescriptions, and now this is really a burden upon them," said Joann Tobias-Molina, APS Regional Director. "We know he's getting his roof patched but because of privacy concerns adult protective services can't say what else he might be getting."

The hopes are if the state can't help, someone can.
