Defenders reveal several ways to get apartment problems solved

Man contacts Defenders after sewage backs up in bathtub

SAN ANTONIO - After an email to the KSAT 12 Defenders, an apartment resident got help with a sewer pipe that backed up into his bathtub -- but said more needs to be done.

Adrian Cummings sent a video shot on his phone to the Defenders. On it, he describes the situation in his bathroom at the Rayo del Sol Apartments.

"As you can see, it's flowing over very bad, very rapidly,” Cummings said on the video. “Now our tub is also filling with blue water."

He moved into the apartment in October and said from the beginning there has been a problem with a sewage backup.

"We have overflowing fecal matter in our bathtub," Cummings said on the video.

He said management at Rayo del Sol would not fix the problem.

"They're not doing anything about it at all,” Cummings said. “They're not even lifting a finger. They'll send a maintenance guy over and the maintenance guy acts like it's a big deal to come help us out."

He called the situation a health issue.

"It's unsanitary and that's the biggest part about it," Cummings said.

The KSAT 12 Defenders put in calls to the complex's corporate office and after that ,some repair work and cleanup was done in Cummings’ apartment.

But he said more work was needed, so the Defenders went to get answers from on-site managers. The Defenders were then told to leave the property, but one leasing agent did say that repairs are not finished at the apartment. She also said crews sometimes have trouble getting access because of the residents' dogs.

Cummings is hoping for more progress and wants to move to a new unit or at least get a new tub.

Other options for apartment-dwellers include getting the city involved by calling either Code Enforcement Services or the Metropolitan Health District.

The San Antonio Apartment Association may also be able to help.
