KSAT Defenders help stylists retrieve belongings from locked salon

Bella's Hair Salon on Walzem shut down

SAN ANTONIO - Hair stylist Adela Morales remembers the day her coworker Norma Suarez called to tell her she was locked out of the salon where they worked.

"I walked up ready to get to work and my key wouldn't work and then I looked up and I saw a notice that the locks had been changed," Suarez said.

After six months of employment at Bella's Hair Salon in the 4400 block of Walzem Road, the shop was no longer open for business.

"I have clippers, trimmers, all my brushes, combs, things that I need to continue to work," Morales said.

Suarez and Morales are out of a job, and with their styling tools locked inside, they will have a hard time starting over.

"Equipment is expensive," she said. "Scissors, clippers, guards, my license is in there also, and they told me they wouldn't release that."

"I told her that I have my W-2 to prove that I'm an employee and that she's keeping me from working at another salon by not giving me my stuff," Morales said.

Anna Maria Silva, with QPM Property Management, said without confirmation from the owner or proof of employment, the company would not release anything to the women, not even Suarez's license, which would allow her to seek employment elsewhere.

"They said that if she doesn't pay the rent within several days, it's going to be itemized and auctioned off," Suarez said.

Within a few days of the KSAT Defenders calls to both Silva and the salon owner, the two have come to an agreement.

According to Silva, the owner will be paying back-due rent in hopes of possibly re-opening the salon.

She has also agreed to verify which tools belong to the stylists so they may retrieve them.

The owner of the salon has yet to return calls made by the KSAT Defenders.
