Brian Mylar's Americana Music Blog: Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis

Husband and wife team up for great Americana

HELOTES, Texas - Bruce Robison is an Austin-based singer-songwriter who perhaps most succinctly captures the Americana spirit in his songs. But don't confuse him with his brother Charlie, also an accomplished singer-songwriter.

The boys both grew up in nearby Bandera, but Bruce is the one with the huge country hit songs to his credit.

He wrote "Wrapped," recorded with great success by George Strait, "Angry all the Time," which was recorded by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, and "Travelin' Soldier," which was recorded by the Dixie Chicks.

That's quite a resume!

And now he's teamed up again with his wife, the talented Kelly Willis.

Kelly has a laid-back voice and the talent to choose songs that fit that voice. One of my favorites is "What I Deserve." But she has many others. And pairing up with her husband -- they have four children together -- is a natural for Willis.

Below are some photos of the pair and their band that were taken at Floore's Country Store in Helotes during a performance that was poorly attended. Some major country act was playing at the AT&T Center that night and there were several other activities going on around town.

But Bruce and Kelly went on with the show despite the sparse audience. And truly it was a chance to see them up close and personal from a table down front.

Actually, the first time I saw them both only Bruce was performing. It was at the San Marcos River Pub and Grill. Bruce was there a couple of years ago for a free Sunday show outside and Kelly was walking around taking care of one of their kids.

For the past few years, Bruce and Kelly have only teamed up for shows around the holiday season where they sing all the classics and a few more.

But now it seems they're blending their voices and talents on a more regular basis. And that's a good thing.

Bruce is a terrific singer and you can certainly see him from the back of the hall -- he's at least 6 feet 5 inches tall. Some of my favorite Bruce songs include "Lifeline," "It Came from San Antonio," and, of course, his own versions of the songs listed above recorded (gratefully, I'm sure) by well-known country performers.

Kelly has her version of "Wrapped," as well, and I sure like "Got a Feelin' for Ya" and "If I Left You."

They are great performers and, from what I hear, really nice folks. Support their music and see them LIVE.
