Limiting alcohol, smoking can slow osteoporosis effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, limiting alcohol and quitting smoking can help avoid and slow down the effects of osteoporosis. 

 

Drinking excessive amounts absorbs calcium from bones and decreases bone strength. 

Other side effects of drinking, such as loss of balance, can lead to falling, which is often the cause of a broken bone.  Smoking is toxic to bones and increases the rate of bone loss.
