Blog: Texas Longhorns not taking chances with QBs anymore

SAN ANTONIO - Mack Brown has done a good job of bringing in quarterbacks to the University of Texas since arriving at the 40 acres.
Major Applewhite, Chris Simms, Chance Mock, Vince Young, Connor Wood, Colt McCoy, Jevan Snead, G.J. Kinne, Garrett Gilbert, and David Ash to name a few.
Some have become stars, some were good not great and some were busts.
Texas has also turned away a few QBs, mainly because Mack felt at the time they had the future quarterback on campus already.
Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are from the state of Texas, which means they grew up in the Longhorns' back yard. Neither was seriously looked at by UT, mainly due to Garret Gilbert being on campus. Gilbert was the Gatorade High School Player Of The Year, and the UT staff thought he would carry the burnt orange torch for the next three seasons. Well, Gilbert flopped, and Luck and Griffin went No. 1 and No. 2 in Heisman voting and the NFL draft.
Lesson learned for Mack Brown. Don't be too hard on Brown. One of the big reasons he decided to put all his stock in one quarterback is because so many other quarterbacks have transferred from Texas after learning they wouldn't start.
When Colt McCoy was named the starter, Jevan Snead transferred to Ole Miss, and G.J. Kinne transferred to Tulsa. Connor Wood transferred to Colorado after learning he was foruth on the depth chart and Garrett Gilbert transferred to SMU when he learned his days as the starter were over at Texas.
Well, Mack has decided to take his chances again, and has recruited the top quarterbacks that he can get his hands on in hopes that one of them is the next great Texas quarterback.
David Ash is only a sophomore, but that didn't stop Texas from recruiting Connor Brewer, a four-star recruit from Scottsdale, Ariz. They have high hopes for Brewer, but just in case they went out and got the best Texas high school quarterback from the 2013 recruiting class, Tyrone Swoopes, a five-star kid from Whitewright, Texas. And if that isn't enough depth at quarterback, Texas landed Denton Guyer Jerrod Heard for the 2014 class (no stars available on 2014 class yet).
Who knows, these highly-ranked recruits might end up being busts. But if one of them is the next Andrew Luck or RG3, Mack wants them on campus this time.
