On antibiotics? Get proactive with probiotics

A couple of weeks ago, what started as a head cold -- lots of headaches, fever, sniffles, sore throat, coughing, a cold sweat waking me up through the night, and zero energy -- turned into a sinus infection.
Nothing takes the wind out of my sail like having a sinus infection.
I was avoiding going to the doctor, but once the green gook appeared, and there just was no let up with the pressure and pain in my sinuses, it had to be done. I just couldn’t take it anymore.
My doctor prescribed an antibiotic which took five days to complete the course. After taking the antibiotic for the third day, I did begin to feel markedly better, but I worried about what the antibiotics would do to my digestive system.
Even though antibiotics do a great job at knocking out an infection, they also kill the “good” bacteria in our gut that is essential to balanced flora. You might not think of your body as having those good bacteria, but they’re there, working on your behalf. They’re more commonly known as probiotics, and they help with ever-so-important things like improving digestion.
You’ve probably seen a note along the lines of “May contain live cultures” if you’re a fan of yogurt -- that refers to probiotics. I made sure yogurt was a part of my regular breakfast routine as soon as I started antibiotics. And because it can take weeks to reestablish the good bacteria, I decided to be proactive and started taking a probiotic to replenish the good bacteria in my system along with antibiotic.
Thankfully, my digestive system is still humming and there are no signs of a sinus infection recurrence. Next time you get a bacterial infection and your doc prescribes an antibiotic, consider taking a probiotic as well. You’ll be keeping your gut happy.
