Ging­erbread holiday protein smoothie

With visions of sugary carbs dancing in our heads, it’s not hard to veer off a healthy eating path during the holidays. As much as chocolate chip cookies and whipped cream-topped hot chocolate tastes like heaven in the moment, the inevitable sugar hangover can make us question what we were thinking when we justified “just one more.”

Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice flavor for a healthier choice. This gingerbread protein smoothie has all the great flavors of gingerbread cookies without the empty calories and sugar high (and crash). It’s one of my favorite nutritious holiday snacks when I need to recharge and get some extra nutrients. It’s great for breakfast, after a workout or even as a dessert. Fresh ginger adds a spicy seasonal kick and soothes the stomach by helping promoting healthy digestion -- a much-needed benefit for countering the overindulgence and stress of the holidays. Gingerbread Holiday Protein Smoothie
Serves 1

1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
granola (optional)

1. Blend all ingredients (except granola) together until smooth.

2. Pour into a glass. Top with granola. Enjoy.
