San Antonio man's house includes Spurs room
Vincent Garay built an addition on to his house to store championship items and collectibles
SAN ANTONIO - Vincent Garay might be the biggest Spurs fan in San Antonio.
Who else would build an entire addition to their home because of their devotion to the Silver and Black?
In 2002, Garay sacrificed his back yard to build his “Spurs room," which seats about 30 people on game night.
Its main purpose is to house the myriad items Garay has collected for more than a decade.
“I added this room and I had a Spurs collection, so I said, ‘Why not make it a Spurs room?’” Garay said, as he clutched his homemade Spurs championship belt. “So I started adding and adding and adding more stuff.”
The room is chock full of Spurs memorabilia.
Conference championship banners, some in better shape than others are pinned to the wall.
Playing cards of Spurs past and present hang side-by-side in frames Garay designed himself.
Homemade plaques from the team’s previous championship runs line the entire room.
A custom pool table complete with the team’s logo and silver and black pool balls is the room’s centerpiece.
But Garay said no Spurs room could be complete without a shrine to the “Ice Man” George Gervin.
His includes a bobble-head in a glass case signed by the Spurs legend.
“George Gervin was just a natural all-star,” Garay said. “I cherish that right there that’s the one I take care of the most”
Garay built the room in 2002.
His wife, Norma, said she put up little resistance to the idea when her husband first proposed building a new addition to their Northwest Side home.
“We love it,” she said. “A lot of the kids come from church to hang out, play pool. Better for them to be here than out on the streets.”
Garay is so confident in the Spurs that he's already begun the process of making room for items he'll get if and when they win their next title.
He also has plans to be at the AT&T Center Sunday for Game 5, where he could watch his favorite team raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
“My brother has tickets,” Garay said. “I hope he lets me go.”
