Fans flock to barber for shaved Spurs portraits

Rob the Original gives fans unique way to root on Silver & Black

SAN ANTONIO - Spurs fans are seeking out professional barber and artist Rob Ferrel to help them cheer on their team in an hairy way: by shaving players’ faces onto the back of their heads.

From Tim Duncan to Tony Parker to Danny Green, Rob creates customers’ requests freehand by using an image on his smartphone as a reference.

He never planned on being a barber -- he was an artist first.

But eventually the two meshed, and he started shaving Spurs symbols a few years ago.

Then he stepped up his game.

"Local barbers were starting to do the same thing I was doing, so I wanted to stand out and do something different,” Rob said. “So I got my little brother as a guinea pig and and I gave it a shot and it looked good. (There's) no looking back, I’ve just been doing portraits.”

And now that the Spurs are in the finals, he’s seen a rush of customers wanting to don a ‘do of their favorite player.

Each portrait takes about 90 minutes to complete and costs $80 to $100.

"Everywhere you go, people are stopping you amazed by it,” he said. “I think its like a way of showing how much they love their team or even the player.”

On game day, fans get their designs colored in.

"They can leave here and wear if for the rest of the day,” Rob said.

When the Spurs aren’t in season, Rob says customers often come in requesting shaved portraits of loved ones who have passed or pop icons- from Tupac Shakur to Marilyn Monroe.

Word of Rob’s work has spread far beyond San Antonio thanks to social media.

His shop is located in the Pica Pica Shopping Plaza at 910 SE Military Drive, suite C002.
