Seniors support San Antonio Spurs by doing Harlem Shake
Video posted to YouTube drawing raves
SAN ANTONIO - Some San Antonio senior citizens have created a video to support the Spurs by performing the Harlem Shake.
In the video, which is posted on YouTube, seniors from their 60s to their 90s jump and cheer in their Spurs gear.
They are now an internet sensation and a vivid reminder that the young have nothing on the old when it comes to team spirit.
The video was a big departure for the seniors at the Copeland Senior Activity Center on South Flores.
They are more accustomed to using a Tibetan singing bowl and practicing the gentle art of Tai Chi. It relaxes the body and the spirit, unlike the chant used to support the local NBA team: Go Spurs go.
That chant, unlike the calming effects of Tai Chi, gets the spirit all riled up. So riled up that some of these dancing seniors felt much younger than their real ages.
"We all dance,” said Matilda Vargas. "We jump and dance and everything. I was thinking that I was a teenager.”
Asked her real age, she replied, “I'm 75."
Alice Gonzales is even older than that and said the video brought out her Spurs spirit.
"I'm only 87 years old but I was jumping around like a teenager," Gonzales said. “I love Timmy and I love Parker. I love Ginobili and those two new guys that did all those three-pointers.”
Participant Toni Cardenas definitely did not feel like a teenager.
"No, I was aching and I was holding on with my cane," Cardenas said.
But she too got into the Spurs spirit.
At this senior center, for now Tai Chi can take a backseat to the Spurs.
