Olmos Street Residents Frustrated Over Lack Of Speed Humps

Residents on West Olmos had been asking for help on their street for years.

"Speeding is still here," said Patricia Doria, President of the Los Angeles Heights and Keystone Neighborhood Association. "Drag racing still here, nothing changed, the problem is still the same."

In 2002, residents asked the city for speed humps.

A letter sent by the city of San Antonio to homeowners claimed the Traffic Engineering Division completed a speed and volume study on West Olmos.

Based on the study, the letter stated West Olmos is preliminarily eligible for speed hump installation pending fund.

But six years later, residents said they will don't have speed humps.

It wasn't until a fatal traffic accident a few months ago that claimed the life of young woman that residents grew frustrated.

Authorities blamed the fatality on West Olmos and Buckeye on drunken driving, but residents believe speeding on the one-way street may have played a role in the deadly crash.

"We don't want to lose anymore lives on the street," said Doria.

The Defenders then contacted City's Public Works about the letter.

"It should not have gone out," said April Hernandez, Public Information Manager for Public Works, relating to the 2002 letter.

Hernandez admitted that the 2002 letter was a mistake.

West Olmos, Hernandez said, is a major thoroughfare with a speed limit of 35, not eligible for speed humps.

The city apologized to the residents and said it will provide new striping and new permanent markers for the street.

A digital speed sign has also been placed in the neighborhood as part of a study on the street.

Residents said they won't be satisfied until they see results.

"Let us help save another life," said Doria.

The Defenders will monitor West Olmos street to make sure the city keeps its promise.
