SAN ANTONIO -- About 100 people showed up at a San Antonio Independent School District middle school Wednesday night to hear from district officials as to why the campus needs to be closed.
The meeting at Cooper Middle School was the first in a series of public meetings to address the proposed closure of six SAISD schools.
Superintendent Robert Duron told parents that closing the schools will save the district millions of dollars and allow it to hire more teachers and provide better electives for students.
"The whole idea of closing schools will help us achieve all of these priorities," Duron said.
But one parent told district officials that it's not all about dollars and cents.
"This is not just a school, it's a family. That's what you need to consider; that's what you need to see," a woman said.
Sonia Ortiz said that she is concerned that moving her son to another school will do him more harm than good academically.
"He struggled through elementary school and for the first time (he) is doing well," she said. "I'm afraid if he moves, classes will be large and they won't pay attention to him."
The proposal calls for the 339 students at Cooper to attend Rhodes or Tafolla middle schools or Lowell Academy. Parents would have a choice as to which school their children would attend.
Five other schools are also slated for closure. To view a schedule of public meetings, click

Ultimately, the school board will decide whether to approve Duron's recommendation.
A vote could be held during a board meeting on Feb. 25.
