Kenedy ISD Cancels Classes

POSTED: Monday, February 25, 2008
UPDATED: 5:44 pm CST February 25, 2008

Classes were canceled Monday at Kenedy Independent School District after police discovered that Kenedy Middle School Principal Rick Johnson disappeared and was carrying weapons.

Kenedy Police Chief Dwayne DuBose said that the campuses were closed for precautionary reasons after Johnson's wife told police Sunday night that the school administrator was angry and frustrated.

"The family did tell us that he had firearms ... and he was traveling," DuBose said. "The concerns that came out was that he was unhappy with the school district and he apparently came to the school district when he was asked not to."

Johnson was eventually located in Oklahoma and apparently was aware of the situation, DuBose said. The principal was not believed to be a threat to anyone, DuBose said.

Johnson was placed on administrative leave and the district was investigating the matter, DuBose said.

Police were not expected to file charges against Johnson, DuBose said.

Police were patrolling the campuses Monday and classes were scheduled to resume Tuesday.

Kenedy is located 60 miles southeast of San Antonio.
