SAN ANTONIO -- Shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, the trustees of the San Antonio Independent School District voted unanimously to close six schools as a cost-cutting measure.Travis and Bowie elementaries, Mann and Cooper middle schools, and Pfeiffer and Carroll academies will close at the end of the 2007-08 school year, as laid out by the district's attempt to cut operating costs and improve efficiency. The fears of some district residents that the shuttered facilities would be taken over by area higher educational institutions may be put to rest, though, as the trustees agreed to keep the buildings under SAISD operation.
Under the new plan placed on Monday evening's agenda, the district will study ways to keep the six schools in some form of educational facilities. District officials said the schools will not be sold.Tune into KSAT 12 News and check KSAT.com Tuesday for further details of the district's plans.
