SAISD Temporarily Closes Six Libraries

Schools Are Slated For Closure In Cost-Cutting Measures

A controversial decision to close six schools in the San Antonio Independent School District was brought back to the forefront after what school officials called an inadvertent jump-start to the closing procedures.

The libraries at six schools slated for closure were closed by individual librarians last week for inventory, according to district officials.

A half-dozen schools will close after the completion of this school year as the SAISD looks to save money by condensing classes, but one mother of a Travis Elementary School student was upset again when she found the school's library closed down last week.

School board trustees and the superintendent both said the lockdown was premature.

"(Superintendent Robert Duron) said no, by all means, the students will be allowed to check out books to the end of the school year," trustee Olga Hernandez said. "We're not cutting them short of anything."

Hernandez said the librarians simply started early after getting final directions from the school district about the proper procedure to close the school, and that all six librarians have been told to keep the libraries open and follow the district's standard procedure to complete inventories in late May.
