Economy Forces Christian School Closure

The struggling economy is being blamed for the upcoming closure of a north side Christian school 10 years after its opening.

The Harvest Fellowship School notified parents this week of the school's plan to shut down, forcing its 140 students to find a new school.

"I don't think anyone's angry," parent Wendy Rodriguez said. "There's no reason to be angry. Probably disappointment and just a little fear because now we have to start all over again."

School administrators held an education fair at the school to help parents get their children enrolled at other area Christian schools, but parents like Carolyn Dick said her children will have to go another route.

"We'll probably homeschool," she said. "We've been praying about this, and that's (where) we feel the Lord is leading us."

School officials said they were losing about $30,000 per month with rising prices and a lack of enrollment. Unless they come up with $300,000 to cover expenses through the end of the school year, they said, the last day of classes is scheduled for Dec. 20.
