Poteet High Parents Fight For Coach

POSTED: Monday, March 23, 2009
UPDATED: 8:34 am CDT March 24, 2009

Dozens were on hand at a school board meeting to protest the board's decision not to renew a contract for Poteet High School's head football coach and athletic director.

Despite excellent job reviews and a winning record, protestors accused board members of not renewing Randy Palmer's contract in an effort to promote relatives. The tiny town south of San Antonio is strewn with signs showing support for Palmer, who has worked as the school's head football coach and athletic director for a year.

"It's really upsetting to know we're going to let someone of Randy Palmer's caliber leave here because of small town politics," said Paula Korus. "It's sad."

Students were among those showing support for Palmer at Monday's meeting.

"He's a good friend," said student Matthew Santos. "He's more than just a coach, he's more like a role model to us. We look up to him."

Board members did not give a reason for their decision, but a small group of board supporters, including the board president's wife and a board member's fiance said they stood by the board's decision.

"I think people are wanting a change and they just want their children to get equal opportunities," said Veronica Oropeza.
