SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Independent School District approved a plan to reopen two previously shuttered schools and use them for their new Head Start centers.
The district's board of trustees approved reopening Carroll and Phifer elementary schools and repurposing three others: Carvajal, Tynan and Knox elementary schools, all to be used for new Head Start centers. Students from the repurposed schools would be moved to other nearby elementary schools, said SAISD spokeswoman Leslie Price.
"We believe the best way to accommodate students is through standalone, full-service centers where we can house as many 3- and 4-year-olds together and provide all the services," she said.
The city of San Antonio recently split its Head Start contract between four local providers, including the SAISD.
