SAN ANTONIO -- There is continuing talk and plans to downsize San Antonio Independent School District schools as a result of declining enrollment, a district spokeswoman said.
"This is about restructuring the district to fit the changed population and enrollment patters that we have," said SAISD spokeswoman Leslie Price.
Committee members are pushing three proposals for the community to review and give the school board feedback. In one of those recommendations, the district is considering closing more than a dozen schools and repurposing 11 others, "meaning a high school might become a middle school, and elementary school might become a middle school and changing out what their focus is," Price said.
That plan might also include building a brand new high school.
"Students that were going to Sam Houston and Brackenridge high schools would go to the new school," Price said.
In the other plans, there is the possibility of converting Burbank High School into a magnet school or closing Sam Houston and creating a magnet high school on the east side.
"This is an opportunity to build an even stronger school district," Price said.
The school district expects to present the three proposals to the community by next month. It plans to soon start putting out the dates for the community meetings.
