SAISD Board Considers Sports Complex

$7.5 Million Wheatley Heights Sports Complex Would Host Track, Football, Soccer, Baseball, Softball

POSTED: Monday, March 8, 2010

The San Antonio ISD board of trustees met Monday night to hear about a proposed sports complex for the East side.

The Wheatley Heights Sports Complex is one of 13 projects being funded by the Bexar County Amateur Sports Facilities program approved by voters in 2008.

The $7.5 million facility would be built in the Wheatley Heights area devastated by flooding in 1998.

On Monday night, the board heard details of the plan to determine if they want to become partners in the project.

"In SAISD, you know, we're so landlocked, it's hard for us to build because everything is so consumed," said SAISD athletics director Gil Garza. "But with this facility, I can see a lot of possibilities in the future."

The complex is being developed by the nonprofit Eastside Christian Action Group. It would boast track facilities, football and soccer fields as well as baseball and softball.

"It means a lot for any community, but it surely means a lot for an area that hadn't had anything done," Garza said. "Plus, it was a flooded area, so it brings back some life to the area."
