Board members on March 27 voted unanimously to appoint Martinez from a pool of five applicants to fill an unexpired term. Martinez's term expires in 2019.

Martinez replaces longtime trustee Olga Hernandez, who resigned Feb. 21 after she was arrested on federal charges in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme.

Martinez is vice president of external relations with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, a lifelong resident of SAISD and a parent of two SAISD students, a district news release said.
