Parents upset over Kitty Hawk Middle School's handling of teacher arrest notification

Frederick Darnell Ward accused of inappropriate contact with female student

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – Some parents whose children attend Kitty Hawk Middle School are angry over the way in which a teacher's arrest was communicated.

Frederick Darnell Ward was arrested and charged Monday with indecency with a child by contact. An arrest affidavit said a 12-year-old student told a counselor that Ward touched her chest through her clothing and kissed her. Ward denies the accusation and has since resigned.

The school sent an email at 9:30 p.m. Monday to students and parents who are on an email list. But not all parents are on the list, which upset those who found out about it from other people. Some parents, including Camesaa Wilson, said a letter should have been sent home with students.

"I feel like a note or something should have been sent out, so that the parents are aware of what's going on," Wilson said outside the school on Tuesday morning.

"Probably so, in addition to the email. That would have been good," parent Pamela Epstein said.

Judson Independent School District spokesman Steve Linscomb said email is the most efficient way to get information out. Linscomb said letters can get lost en route from school to home.

"We try to notify parents of all sorts of different things, whether it's through robocalls or an email blast or whatever. And that is their choice to opt out of that," Linscomb said.
