Police: Emilio Was Intoxicated

POSTED: Friday, May 2, 2008
UPDATED: 3:26 pm CDT May 2, 2008

Toxicology reports show Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was intoxicated when the bus he was driving on Easter Sunday crashed, law enforcement authorities said Friday.

Navaira was severly injured when he was thrown from the bus as it crashed into a retaining wall along the highway. He was initially in a coma following the crash, but has condition has since been improved to the point that doctors upgraded his condition and transferred him to a rehabilitation center. The singer is expected to have trouble with his memory and concentration as he recovers. But his doctors have said Navaira has been able to stand, eat, sign his name and converse with his family.

The singer was among six people aboard the bus in the crash on Interstate 610 in Bellaire, near Houston. Everyone inside the bus was injured, but none as serious as Navaira, officials said. They were returning home to San Antonio after playing at a Houston club the evening before.

Navaira was jailed in 2005 on suspicion of drunken driving after a single-vehicle rollover crash, police said.

Emilio's brother, Raul, refused to comment on the police incident report.

"I have no comment, you know. We're just going to take it day by day and let the attorneys handle it."

Raul Navaira said he didn't know if Emilio knew about the DWI charge.
